I would roll my eyes when my mom would say, “One day when you are a mom, you will understand”.
But like most things, she was right. For no matter how much you love your mom, your mom loves you more. A mother’s love is theoretical until the day you become one yourself.
Trying to explain it comes up short. It’s something to be experienced. So I am particularly delighted when a first time mom comes into our Montagu Dried Fruit and Nuts store, anticipating the great love affair that she is about to embark on.
Women tend to look after themselves in pregnancy, carefully considering what they eat. They seek out the health benefits of dried fruit and nuts. For example, almonds, figs and dates provide calcium, reducing the risk of hypertension and pre-eclampsia during pregnancy. The calcium also promotes the development of strong bones and teeth, healthy nerves and muscles of a growing baby.
Pregnancy is often associated with cravings and increased appetites. You know… this ‘eating for two’ business. But we don’t talk enough about how difficult it can be for some moms-to-be to eat. Some women battle with nausea throughout their pregnancy, and others find that they just don’t have much of an appetite. To help with nausea and stimulate appetite, our pillow-soft pink lady dried apple wedges work well for those that seek out sweetness.
A tauter option (for those who prefer something a little less sweet) is our plump and juicy dried Turkish apricots. These have their own unique health benefits too, which is good for mom-to-be and her growing baby bump.
All the advice you’re given before your baby arrives is nothing compared what comes your way when they’re born. The list of what to eat and what not to eat peaks on the topic of breastfeeding. And then it all suddenly stops, roughly when baby starts eating solids.
It is easy to neglect your health when you have a family to care for, but moms have to keep up their strength, take good care of themselves and stick around. Raising our little ones requires energy and stamina. So while all moms should be spoilt on Mother’s Day, I hope that they spoil themselves too, giving themselves the gift of good health, for the love of their children.
