Getting your kids to eat healthy foods like fruit and veggies is like pulling teeth. Nothing reveals a child’s capacity for stubbornness like when they don’t want to eat something. It’s either the texture, the taste, the smell, or even the look of the food that they don’t like.
You beg, plead, bribe, threaten (maybe even sob a little on the inside) but your efforts are all in vain as you realise you’re fighting a losing battle with your tiny human.
And just like little mules, they’ve no sooner dug in their heels and they ain’t gonna budge.
Well, all is not lost. We’ve realised that half the battle is simply making healthy food look and smell appealing. Once you get that down, the rest becomes a lot easier.
Here are some creative, healthy snacks that your kids (and you) will love:
1. Little Dippers
These healthy bites are so easy to make and are a healthy alternative to sweets and salty snacks. They’re best eaten immediately, before the apple slices turn brown. This one’s a winner.
- Simply chop an apple into medium sized wedges.
- Place a toothpick into each wedge, dip one of the ends into nut butter and then roll in crushed peanuts or slivers of toasted almonds.
2. Dried Fruit Skewers
Sometimes kids just want something interesting and colourful to eat. Dried fruit skewers are probably the easiest snacks to put together. No mess, no fuss, just happy tummies.
If you don’t have the time to create them yourself, pop into your nearest Montagu store and get some of our ready-made dried fruit skewers.
- Try placing a selection of juicy dried apple wedges, dried pears, dried apricots, dried peaches, or pitted dates on a wooden skewer stick.
- Maybe pop a couple of blocks of cheddar, Gouda or sweet-milk cheese in between the dried fruit for savoury flavours to break the sweetness. Kids will love it.
3. Trail Mix Popcorn
What could be better than a tasty trail mix for kids? We love this recipe because it includes every kid’s favourite snack: popcorn! Get your kids involved by letting them choose what they want to put in their trail mix. Our Montagu stores stock a wide variety of dried fruit and nuts that kids will have great fun choosing from.
- Make a batch of popcorn (preferably without butter or salt).
- Melt some butter, and add it to a mixture of honey and pecan nuts. Then toss the honey and pecan mix into the popcorn, place the mixture on a baking tray, and bake at 180°C for about 15 minutes.
- As a treat you can add a couple of dark chocolate chips to the mix.
4. Baked Sweet Potato Fries
Kids love sweet potato.
When baked in the oven, they turn soft, sweet and yummy. Sweet potatoes are a healthier choice over regular French fries. You can even make your own home made tomato sauce to go with it, making this a fun dipping snack for your kids.
- Simply drizzle sweet potato wedges (par cooked in the microwave) with a little olive oil and seasoning (like salt and pepper) on a greased baking tray for about 25 minutes at 180°C.
- Leave to cool for 5 minutes, serve and enjoy.
5. Carrots with Peanut Dipping Sauce
Most kids love peanut butter and jam sandwiches, but when you’re trying to break the bread cycle, it usually leaves us with very few snack options. It’s not easy, but it can be done. This tasty dipping sauce is easy to pop into your child’s lunchbox with some crunchy carrots and can be stored in the fridge.
What you need:
- 3 tablespoons of regular or crunchy peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon of honey
- A splash of soy sauce
- A few drops of sesame oil
- Water to smooth
- Chopped carrot sticks
You can definitely get the kids involved on this one. They’ll be more inclined to eat something they’ve helped create. They can grate the carrots, for example.
Simply whisk all the ingredients (except the carrots, of course) and add a little water to get the consistency you desire for dipping. Then let the sauce chill in the fridge for an hour and serve.
Try this recipe with apple wedges instead of carrot sticks.
